4. Installation & Wiring
4.1 What's in the Box
The SmartShunt IP65 unit with pre-wired cables:
- Red cable (Vbatt+) — 1.5m with 1A fuse and M10 eye terminal
- Grey cable (Aux) — 1.5m with 1A fuse and M10 eye terminal
- Black cable (VE.Direct) — 1.5m with VE.Direct socket
IP65 Potted Design: Unlike the standard SmartShunt, all cables are permanently attached. Do not attempt to remove or modify them.
4.2 Mounting
The SmartShunt IP65 can be mounted in outdoor or harsh environments. It has two 5.5mm mounting holes in the base. Use appropriate screws or bolts (not included) to secure the unit.
4.3 Connections Overview
| Terminal |
Connection |
Type |
| A | LOAD MINUS | M10 bolt (300A: M8) |
| B | BATTERY MINUS | M10 bolt (300A: M8) |
| C | VE.Direct (black wire) | VE.Direct socket |
| D | Vbatt+ (red wire with fuse) | M10 ring terminal |
| E | Aux (grey wire with fuse) | M10 ring terminal |
4.4 Basic Electrical Connections
CRITICAL: ALL negative cables from loads, chargers, inverters, and solar chargers must be connected to the LOAD MINUS side of the shunt. No other connections should be made to the BATTERY MINUS side or the negative battery terminal directly.
- Connect the negative battery terminal to the M10 bolt on the BATTERY MINUS side. Torque: max 21Nm (300A: 10Nm).
- Connect the negative of the electrical system to the LOAD MINUS side. Torque: max 21Nm (300A: 10Nm). All DC loads, inverters, battery chargers and solar chargers must connect here.
- Connect the M10 eye terminal of the red cable (Vbatt+) to the positive battery terminal.
The battery monitor is now powered up.
4.5 Auxiliary Connections (Optional)
The grey Aux cable can monitor one of the following:
- Second Battery Voltage: Connect the M10 lug of the grey Aux cable to the positive of a second battery. The second battery's negative must be connected to the LOAD MINUS side.
- Midpoint Monitoring: Connect the Aux cable to the midpoint of a series battery bank.
- Temperature Monitoring: Connect the optional temperature sensor (sold separately). The sensor ring connects to the negative battery terminal.
4.6 GX Device Connection
Connect the VE.Direct socket (end of the black cable) to a GX device using a standard VE.Direct cable. This provides real-time battery data on the GX device and the VRM online portal.
